And this isn\u2019t some abstract policy debate\u2014it\u2019s a full-blown operational crisis that threatens national security, public safety, and our standing as a global leader.<\/p>\n<p>Drones are already revolutionizing warfare, disaster response, logistics, and infrastructure monitoring. Every major world power is integrating them at scale\u2014except us.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the real kicker: we still don\u2019t have a national system to control and coordinate drone operations.<\/p>\n<p>We have Air Traffic Control (ATC) for traditional aviation, so why are we pretending we don\u2019t need the same\u2014or better\u2014for drones?<\/p>\n<h3>The Consequences Are Happening Right Now<\/h3>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a \u201cfuture problem.\u201d It\u2019s happening right now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disaster response is delayed because drones can\u2019t communicate across agencies.<\/li>\n<li>Law enforcement and military UAVs are flying blind in contested airspace.<\/li>\n<li>Foreign drone manufacturers are eating our lunch while U.S. companies and investors hesitate over regulatory uncertainty. Every day we wait, we lose ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Fix: A National Unmanned Systems Integration Framework (USIF)<\/h3>\n<p>The U.S. needs an Unmanned Systems Integration Framework (USIF) to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Improve coordination between federal, state, and local agencies, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across military, law enforcement, emergency responders and commercial operators.<\/li>\n<li>Secure our airspace and prevent unauthorized drone operations.<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate emergency response times and ensure UAVs actually help\u2014not hinder\u2014disaster efforts.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent drone and aircraft collisions and keep operations seamless and safe.<\/li>\n<li>Unlock billions in commercial growth and make America the global leader in unmanned aviation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>This isn\u2019t some half-baked \u201cmonitoring\u201d system. A USIF would actively control and manage drone traffic.<\/p>\n<p>If we don\u2019t act now, we permanently fall behind.<\/p>\n<h3>What Happens If We Keep Dragging Our Feet?<\/h3>\n<p>Every delay puts us further in the hole:\u00a0Disaster response remains a mess\u2014costing lives.\u00a0Military and homeland security operations stay compromised\u2014creating national security\u00a0risks.\u00a0Investors and aerospace companies look elsewhere because uncertainty kills business.<\/p>\n<p>How long before we lose control completely?<\/p>\n<p>If we keep waiting for Congress to \u201cget around to it,\u201d we\u2019ll be stuck relying on foreign-made drone technology, just like we screwed up with 5G.<\/p>\n<h3>National Security: We Are Wide Open for Attack<\/h3>\n<p>While we\u2019re over here debating, our adversaries are already moving.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re building autonomous drone swarms, cyber-hardened UAVs, and AI-driven airspace attacks. Meanwhile, we don\u2019t even have a structure in place that we can improve its security\u2014let alone scale it to meet national needs.<\/p>\n<p>As National Security Advisor Michael Waltz put it:\u00a0&#8220;Gaps between the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement, and the Defense Department leave us vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Without a unified national strategy, three massive security threats emerge:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cybersecurity failures \u2013 Our drone networks are sitting ducks for hacking and foreign interference.<\/li>\n<li>Situational awareness gaps \u2013 The military, intelligence, and law enforcement aren\u2019t even working from the same UAV picture.<\/li>\n<li>Foreign-controlled infrastructure \u2013 If we don\u2019t set the standards, China and other hostile nations will.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>We either control our own airspace\u2014or someone else will.<\/p>\n<h3>Progress Is Happening\u2014But It\u2019s Not Nearly Enough<\/h3>\n<p>The FAA is trying to test drone integration, but without federal backing, it\u2019s a drop in the bucket. Right now, we\u2019ve got:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A messy patchwork of state and local drone regulations.<\/li>\n<li>No federal-level system to coordinate operations.<\/li>\n<li>Bureaucratic red tape slowing down innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy put it:\u00a0&#8220;We have to make sure that we have rules in place to make America the best home for this innovation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Translation: Right now, we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3>The Public Trust Factor: We Need to Get This Right<\/h3>\n<p>Drones aren\u2019t just about security and commerce\u2014they\u2019re about public trust. We need rules that protect privacy while still allowing the technology to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>A USIF must include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clear rules on data collection \u2013 No creepy surveillance loopholes.<\/li>\n<li>Transparency in public-sector drone use \u2013 Government UAVs should be accountable.<\/li>\n<li>Defined airspace rights \u2013 Protect privacy without stifling innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the same time, we can\u2019t let overregulation kill progress. A well-structured USIF must let government and industry work together\u2014not drown businesses in red tape.<\/p>\n<h3>The Good News: This Is Fixable<\/h3>\n<p>If we make the right moves, the U.S. can still dominate this space.\u00a0Automated air traffic control for drones? Possible.\u00a0Faster, better emergency response? Absolutely. A thriving private sector driving innovation and job creation? 100%.<\/p>\n<p>A properly funded, well-structured USIF would:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li>Strengthen national security<\/li>\n<li>Protect U.S. economic interests<\/li>\n<li>Ensure America leads the future of unmanned aerial tech<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Time for Action Is NOW<\/h3>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a technology issue. It\u2019s a leadership issue. Here\u2019s what needs to happen:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A National Drone Strategy Summit must be convened within 90 days to launch a USIF.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Legislation must follow immediately to fund and govern unmanned airspace<\/strong>\n<p><strong>infrastructure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>The technology is ready. The solution is clear.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. cannot afford another year of inaction. The technology exists, and the path forward is clear.
