{"id":105263,"date":"2025-02-03T13:05:11","date_gmt":"2025-02-03T18:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/?p=105263"},"modified":"2025-02-03T13:05:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T18:05:11","slug":"faa-establishes-no-drone-zone-tfrs-for-super-bowl-lix-in-new-orleans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/2025\/02\/03\/faa-establishes-no-drone-zone-tfrs-for-super-bowl-lix-in-new-orleans\/","title":{"rendered":"FAA Establishes No Drone Zone, TFRs for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAA issues No Drone Zone, TFRs for Super Bowl<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>By DRONELIFE Features Editor Jim Magill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FAA has designated a \u201cNo Drone Zone\u201d for Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX on game day, Sunday, Feb. 9 and in the skies around the city\u2019s downtown area during the days leading up to the big event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the agency said it would issue temporary flight restrictions for all aircraft \u2013 manned or unmanned \u2013 within a 10-nautical-mile radius of the stadium Feb. 6 through Feb. 11.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105264\" src=\"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-30_10NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-30_10NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-30_10NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-104x130.jpg 104w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-30_10NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-30_10NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105265\" src=\"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-1-and-a-Half-NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-1-and-a-Half-NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-1-and-a-Half-NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-104x130.jpg 104w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-1-and-a-Half-NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/dronelife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025-New-Orleans-1-and-a-Half-NM-TFR-for-SB-LIX-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UAV operators who enter the restricted areas without permission could face the confiscation of their drone, fines up to $75,000 and potential criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>On game day, drones will be restricted in the airspace around the Superdome beginning at 1:30 p.m. CST within 1.5 nautical miles of the stadium up to 2,000 feet in altitude.\u202fThe restrictions will expand between 4:30 until 10:30 p.m. CST to a 30-nautical-mile radius and up to 18,000 feet in altitude.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, drone flights will be restricted for 1.5 nautical miles up to an altitude of 2,000 feet around Lafayette Square from Monday, February 3 through Saturday, February 8, during the following times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>February 3 between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>February 5 between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>February 6 between noon and 11 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>February 7 between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>February 8 between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/superbowl\/SB-LIX-Flght%20Advsry.pdf\">flight advisory<\/a>, the FAA said it was issuing the restrictions at the request of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agency said it would issue Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) depicting the Special Security Instruction (SSI) TFRs for all aircraft flying in the skies above the city on the day of the game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny person who knowingly and willingly violates these restrictions may be subject to certain criminal and\/or civil penalties. Pilots who violate security TFRs or procedures may be intercepted, detained and interviewed by law enforcement\/security personnel,\u201d the advisory said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, the FAA said it \u201cis working with law enforcement, the aviation community and the National Football League to ensure safe, secure and efficient aircraft operations for Super Bowl LIX.\u201d It warned that general aviation pilots flying near New Orleans must \u201cfollow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faa.gov%2Fsuperbowl%2FSB-LIX_DOM-NOTICE.pdf&amp;data=05%7C02%7C%7C32a78764b1cb4dd638fe08dd4242fda3%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638739577978270175%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=yMmPwsouPdt%2FIElWv7yOeDEEbTd3BcQITere10YGGTg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">special air traffic procedures\u00a0<\/a>and comply with additional operational requirements,\u201d during the period when the TFRs are in effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe expect nearly 7,000 takeoffs and landings and around 600 aircraft will be parked at local airports during Super Bowl Week,\u201d the FAA said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some UAS operations will be authorized within the defined SSI\u00a0airspace if the operators are in compliance with the following requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prior to TFR activation, the UAS flight operation has been pre-approved by the FAA System Operations Support Center (SOSC);<\/li>\n<li>Requests for pre-approved UAS flight operations can expect disposition of their request in a minimum of 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li>If the pre-approved UAS flight operation is conducted in direct support of an active national defense, homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, or disaster response mission, and prior notification has been provided to the designated facility contact; or<\/li>\n<li>If the pre-approved UAS flight operation is conducted in direct support of a significant and urgent governmental interest; and<\/li>\n<li>The pre-approved UAS flight operation complies with all other applicable federal aviation regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FAA has issued TFRs and drone flight restrictions for Super Bowl games for several years. In addition, federal law prohibits flying drones in and around stadiums that seat 30,000 people or more beginning one hour before and ending one hour after the scheduled time of any of the following events: NFL games; Major League Baseball games; NCAA Division One football games; and NASCAR Sprint Cup; Indy Car, and Champ Series races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent months however, concerns surrounding the potential of drones being flown near sports stadiums by careless or clueless pilots, or those wishing to inflict actual harm, have greatly increased.
